I purchased a 1975 Chevrolet Bel Air VIN 1K69U5Y178338, I need to know based on the VIN the type of engine?
ItВґs either a 350 or 400, IВґm going to take this engine and transmission and clean it up and place in my 1970 SS Chevelle. As far as I can tell the 5th digit is the engine indicator, but searching this info on the WEB is not easy.
Sorry, but the previous answer has misleading and confusing info. Automobiles produced prior to 1981 had the engine code in the 5th position. According to the VIN Number you posted the 5th position is a "U". You have a 400 w/a 4bbl carb.
