is the 600 mile break in service really needed for a motorcycle?

A bike mechanic at a local Kawasaki shop told me that
"the 600 mile "Break In Service" is really just an oil change, oil filter replacement,etc etc basically what a typical Jiffy Lube visit does to a car except for the fact that

In addition to Jon's answer...the first service is THE most critical service needed by ANY vehicle. During the first few hundred miles, all the engine parts mate themselves to each other, the MAIN ones to be concerned about are the piston rings-to-cylinder
