How do you get a Craftsman Lawn Mower starter off?

I need to get a Craftsman Lawn Mower starter off, but it is being blocked by a plate (gold) that has two bolts. But one bolt is under the big (HUGE!!)plate that is connected to the starter. How do I get my starter off?
I mean, how do you take it

Undo the bolts that hold the fan cowling and remove the cowling, then undo the two bolts that hold the starter and remove the starter.
Simple, eh. Changed hundreds of them and they take just ten minutes to change out.
